Apple Bluetooth Mighty Mouse

Posted on July 28th, 2006 by Brandon Quintana in keyboards and mice

I was in my local Apple Store the other day looking for an additional battery for my MacBook when I decided I needed two Bluetooth mice for my computers. That’s always the case when you go into a store looking for one thing and walk out with something completely different. They didn’t even have the battery so I had to buy something or it was a wasted trip. I was looking for a mouse for my MacBook as well as a mouse to replace the Logitech LX501 connected to my Mac Mini.

I use my Mac Mini as a home entertainment PC streaming content through Front Row from my other machines. I had initially purchased the Logitech LX501 and realized the set was designed more for desktop use and the range between the receiver and the mouse and keyboard were not adequate for home theater use. I figured my only option was Bluetooth since it has a range of about 30 feet.

I was looking at the Radtech mice previously but decided that Apple had released their latest and greatest mouse the Bluetooth Mighty Mouse so I decided that was something that would fix my problem and I didn?t have to wait for them to ship out a mouse.

The mouse is $69 which seems like a lot for a mouse by it is Apple so it is what it is. I didn’t mind paying for a mouse that has the features that I would use. It uses 1 or 2 AA batteries and since I am using the mouse at home there’s really no reason why I should use it with only 1 battery. Even if I carried it with me I would probably use 2 AA batteries.

Setup was very easy. The Bluetooth Setup Assistant found the mouse and I was able to use it right away. I installed the software which came with the Mighty Mouse and was able to customize the functions to my needs.

I had used the original Mighty Mouse before and I have to say that it does take some time to get used to. The left and right click buttons which Apple calls primary and secondary functions a little different than your usual mouse but once you get used to the feel it works quite well. The two squeeze buttons on the side is something else that takes a little time getting used to but that works well too. I use the mouse on my coffee table and tracking seems to be good but not great. I don’t see much of a difference with the laser tracking over the optical.

The one thing I did notice is the mouse does not have a red light glowing on the under side. I don’t know if this is a laser mouse thing and only optical mice use the red light for tracking, but it’s kind of nice not have the light especially since it’s in my living room.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the Apple Bluetooth Mighty Mouse. I think I’ll probably try out one of the Radtech models and you can be sure to find a review on this site. The mouse is pretty pricey for what you get but it works as intended so there really are no other complaints from me. You know it’s just a mouse as long as I can point and click and get what I need to do done that?s all that matters to me. If you like Apple products there’s a good chance you’ll take a liking this this mouse. If you don’t like Apple products you?ll probably say it’s way too overpriced. You make the call.
